His comeback in 2010/2011 had amazing songs like "Right Now" and "It's Art" (my favorite song) that put him back on the map. (usually only two years are mandatory for Korean males) Because of this, Psy was pretty much off the radar for a number of years. Then there was some unclear controversy where Psy ended up having to go to the army twice from 2003-2005 and then again 2007-2009. At this point, I would say that Psy had secured a spot as one of the most iconic singers in K-pop history. Psy's uplifting songs like "Bird" and "Champion" really resonated with the depressed attitude of the time and rocketed him to fame. There were a lot of people having financial trouble during the 1990s and early 2000s because of the IMF aftermath. Psy's music and styling was really out there when he debuted, but after getting over the initial shock, many people began to enjoy his music not only because it was entertaining but because most of his songs are really insightful critiques of Korean society.

He mentioned on a tv show (승승장구) that his former manager didn't take him as a serious singer but decided to give him a chance on a whim. Psy's debut was a joke to pretty much everyone but himself. This is because while he is very mainstream K-Pop, he still gets a lot of respect for his music. I would compare Psy to Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye, etc. >!insert spoiler here!< Other subreddits you might like: some
